The Higher Research Seminar: Frank Biermann, Utrecht University - ‘Global Sustainability Governance in the Age of Trump’

This lecture will be divided into two parts. First, Frank Biermann will present an overview of his recent research on global sustainability governance, focusing on the political steering effects of the Sustainable Development Goals. He will share key findings from the ERC GlobalGoals Project, which he initially presented at the Department of Political Science in November 2015. In the second, exploratory part of the lecture, Frank will examine the impact of recent geopolitical shifts, particularly the rise to power of Donald J. Trump, on planetary politics.
Professor Biermann has authored or edited 20 books and published about 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on global institutions in the sustainability domain, with particular focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, international bureaucracies, and global environmental justice. He was the founder and first chair (2008-2018) of the Earth System Governance Project, the leading global research network of on sustainability governance.
He has recently been installed as the Zennström Visiting Professor in Climate Change Leadership at Uppsala University (1 March to 31 July 2025) and been awarded the Volvo Environment Prize in 2024 ‘for defining new pathways for international environmental governance in a period of global change’.
Since 2016, Frank Biermann has been research professor of Global Sustainability Governance with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University. There, he recently directed a 6-year research programme on the effects of the Sustainable Development Goals supported by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council.
Prior to this, from 2003 to 2015, Biermann was professor and head of the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis at the VU University Amsterdam. From 2011 to 2015, he was visiting professor of Earth System Governance at Lund University.
Professor Biermann has spoken in the United Nations General Assembly and the European Parliament and is an elected Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science. In 2021, he won the Distinguished Scholar Award in Environmental Studies by the International Studies Association.
The Higher Research Seminar is held on Wednesdays 13.15 to 14.30 in Eden 367, unless otherwise indicated. PhD Mid-term seminars 13:15 to 14:45.
